Why is it news?

Why is it news when the East Coast has high temperatures?  With the heat index, in NYC it is currently 102.  That isn't outrageous.  It would be if this temp was reported in say, Fairbanks.  But, NYC?  You get heat every summer.  It's just as hot in my hometown today, too.  Big deal...New York is hot in the summertime! Breaking news at 11!
