Rice Krispie Easter Egg Dipper Treats
I'm sure by now, if you own a tv and don't skip over the commercials, you've probably seen the commercial for Rice Krispie Easter Egg Dippers. It features a mom with two little girls forming Rice Krispie treats into egg shapes, then dipping them in melted chocolate and sprinkles. They are all having a blast, and NO mess is made.
Ummmm...I beg to differ. FIRST - Rice Krispies are mother-effing HOT. Making them, I was very nervous about letting Ava help me because your first ingredient is boiling butter, then it's hot, sticky, melted marshmallow. Once you add the RK, then it becomes something that requires some elbow grease to get it mixed right, so a three year old can't help anyway. After that, to form these neat little eggs? The commercial shows the mom and the two girls smiling and laughing as they neatly scoop out perfect portions and just patting them into a ball. NOWHERE on the commercial does it show the amount of Pam cooking spray (I didn't use a recipe, I thought "How hard can it be?") it takes to have this NOT stick to your hand. Once you are all lubed up, you must stick your hands into this molten pot of sticky-goodness and just grin and bear it. Towards the end it gets easier...but that's probably because my nerves were singed off at this point. If anyone has ever made RK treats, you know you have a window of "work" time...so, yes, you must do this while hot.
THEN!!! Comes the melted chocolate. Have you ever worked with melted chocolate? IT'S EFFING HOT. I was VERY nervous about letting Ava dip her hand into a bowl of melted chocolate. So she was allowed to do one egg.
All in all, it's a very cute idea and doesn't take long. But the commercial was very misleading. It's definitely NOT a recipe to do with kids. Although, Ava ate one right away and was QUITE pleased with the turn-out!
I guess the best thing to come out of it was the fact that since all the feeling in your hands is gone from handling 4,000 degree melted marshmallow, clean up is simple. Your hands can scrap the inside of the pot with ease!!!!!
